12 May 4 Spine-Chilling Horror Films For This Coming Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is that time of the year when you want to just honour your mom for being not just a mother, but also a friend and confidant. What better thing could make you hug her tighter during this special occasion than a bone-chilling horror film? In honour of our mums, moms, mamas, madre, or whatever you call your own mother, here are top horror movie recommendations for this coming Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day Massacre (2007)

Starring: Adam Scarimbolo, Noah Fleiss, Mel Gorham

Directed by: Jeff Roenning

Mother’s Day Massacre is not the best film out there. In fact, it’s been rated very badly for being a terrible film. For an indie horror film, however, it’s not that bad at all, and indie film supporters would definitely like it. It tells of the story of Jim Cavanaugh, a shy teenager residing in suburban New Jersey. He was abandoned by his mother as a child and is forced to live with his psychotic redneck dad. This film is a blood bath that features a massacre on Mother’s Day, obviously. It’s not going to change your life or anything, but it will keep you occupied for an hour and a half.

Mothers Day (1980)

Starring: Nancy Hendrickson, Deborah Luce, Tiana Pierce, Rose Ross

Directed by: Charles Kaufman

Brutal and sadistic are two words to best describe this film by Charles Kauffman. It’s a story of two brothers who are willing to do anything for Mother. The film opens with a couple being offered a ride by an old lady, only to be murdered later on by the same old lady (Mother) and her two sons. If you’re comfortable watching a horror film that features violence, rape, and murder, then you will easily like this film.

Mama (2013)

Starring: Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Directed by:  Andrés Muschietti

Mama is a supernatural horror flick directed by Andres Muschietti. He based it on his Argentine short film that follows the story of two young girls who were abandoned in a cabin in the forest. The two girls were rescued after being thought of having survived in the woods on their own and now live with their uncle and his girlfriend. It was later learned that the girls have actually been taken care of by a spiritual entity they often referred to as “Mama”. With the work of master contortionist Javier Botet and the help of practical effects, this film is a truly haunting and terrifying flick.

Goodnight, Mommy (2014)

Starring: Susanne Wuest, Elias Schwarz, Lukas Schwarz

Directed by: Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala

Garnering a rating of 86% from Rotten Tomatoes, this is not your regular cheesy horror film. It features the story of a woman who comes home after a cosmetic facial surgery. Her twin sons are happy to see her again, but wondered if it’s truly their mom under the bandages after the woman displayed strange, cruel behavior. If other horror films like The Other and Bad Seed scared you, Goodnight, Mommy will surely terrorise you like no other and forever change the way you say goodnight to your mom.
